Tony Lynch gets set for Lydden Hill finale

Tony Lynch will bid to secure an unlikely Retro Rallycross Championship title when the series heads to Lydden Hill this weekend for the final two rounds of the season.

Tony and his Landsail Team Geriatric squad make the long trip to the spiritual home of the sport sitting second in the championship standings, which is an achievement in itself after Tony missed rounds one and two of the year whilst recovering from winter surgery.

Putting that to one side, Tony embarked on a stunning run of form when he returned to action in round three and scored four successive victories to move up the standings, although his winning run came to an end at Pembrey last time out where he finished in second spot in Round 7.

It means Tony goes into the double meeting in Kent sitting 13 points down on championship leader Dan Swayland, with a maximum of 40 points still available.

The removal of dropped scores from the championship regulations for this season means Tony has no option but to go on the attack, with his focus firmly on pushing for the victories he needs to stand any chance of beating his rival to the crown.

“The championship was never our aim going into the season when we knew we would be missing the opening rounds, but then we came out in Round 3 and grabbed four wins in a row,” he said.

“All of a sudden, we were within reach of the championship lead, and although we lost some ground to Dan in the last round in Wales, we still moved up into second in the standings.

“Had there still been dropped scores to consider then we’d be in a much stronger position going into the weekend, and trying to outscore Dan by 13 points is going to be a big ask when you consider how quick he has been this season.

“However, I’ve been around motorsport long enough to know that anything can happen and that means it’s vitally important that we maximise our results and pick up as many points as we can.

“We can’t control what happens with another driver, so as long as we come away from the weekend knowing we have done the best job possible then I think we can pleased with how our season has gone, regardless of whether we emerge on top.”
